SOFOSH, giving wings …….

SOFOSH, an acronym for Society of Friends of the Sassoon Hospitals was started in 1964 by a group of socially conscious citizens of Pune for the welfare of poor patients of Sassoon Hospitals.,a large, a 1200 bed, state run hospital. In a tiny section of the vast hospital, professionally trained social workers of SOFOSH tend to the problems of the sick, the needy and the lost. Few among the affluent may be aware of the existence of SOFOSH but for patients in distress it is their hope, their succor and their much needed friend.

Child care activities were intiated in 1973. In the 32 years of its existence, SOFOSH’s Child care Centre, Shreevatsa, has been home and hope to orphan childen without a family, ranging from the new born to the six year old. For SOFOSH they are truly ‘Shreevatsa- Children of God.

Today most of the children Shreevatsa cares for go into adoption. But there are other ‘special’ children who will never go into adoption. A number of these children are physically and mentally challenged and a growing number are afflicted by life threatening ailments. It is for these children that SOFOSH started its Preetanjali project. At SOFOSH we accept the difference of being special and, together with our donors, staff and volunteers, we endevour to make their little world a secure and cheerful place for these most vulnerable members of our society.
